Collaborations

Proenza Schouler for Target Ashish for Topshop

I was thinking about collaborations between designers and high street labels, and wondering if maybe one day these products will be worth more because of the designer label attached to them. There has been many of these collaborations lately, like: Sonia Rykial and Jimmy Choo both for H&M, Alexander Wang and Jill Sanders for Uniqlo (2009), and now Isabel Toledo for Payless Shoes. All these various collaborations bring each designer statement pieces to the masses at lower affordable prices. For many of us, that cannot afford the prices for the pieces from our desired fashion house, just need to sit back and wait for all the collaborations to come in 2010. This year Topshop has teamed up with many talented designers, the one I am waiting for is Jonathan Saunders, who will showcase trends inspired from his runway show. Other designers like Ashish are showcasing Rihana inspired styles, such as spikey motorbike jackets and harem pants.

What we need to think about concerning these collaborations are wether the quality of the clothing is better due to the fact they are linked to a designer. Will these pieces ever become as valuable as a real Sonia Rykiel or Jimmy Choo piece? Probably not. I am sure many collaborations pieces from Target/Proenza Schouler , just to name one, give you a quick designer fix, but there is nothing like the real thing. We should maybe try to focus on buying quality products from stores we trust, more than simply buying the item for the name and that simply dissapears after its first wash cycle.

China finds flawed designer clothes

Many retailers in China have discovered that many clothing belonging to designer labels are made poorly or wrongly labeled. The designer labels in question are Dolce and Gabbana, Hugo Boss, Versace and Hermes. China's Zhejiang Commerce bureau, said they have collected items from various department stores from the richest cities in China and found out that 60% of the clothing was poorly made.

The inspectors also found that many items contained high levels of acid and formaldehyde which "could have caused skin rashes, eye irritations, allergies, respiratory problems and even cancer." The clothes inspected were not made in China, but in Turkey, Italy, France, India and Vietnam.

The Chinese officials are not taking this incident lightly, as they are starting to fine retailers selling these low quality goods and also forcing the shops to remove them. However, China will not be fining the designer labels because they are not Chinese businesses. The question is, have these tainted goods been sent to any other destinations around the globe or only China? And how will people be reacting to the fact they are buying designer clothes, which are premium articles, and receiving a very low quality good in return.

India pulls Fashion TV

Due to an infringement of obscenity laws, Indian officials have decided to block Fashion TV due to the exposure of bare-breasted models on the catwalk.

The Times of India newspaper ran a statement that said: "The visuals were found to be obscene, denigrating women and were not suitable for children and unrestricted public exhibition" and "was offending against good taste and decency."

The indecent show turned out to be Alexander McQueen's 2009 September fashion show, due to this the show will now be blocked for 9 days, only because a pair of boobies. India, where is your freedom of expression? they were only boobs.

Miu Miu Livestream

Sadly I missed yesterday's Miu Miu livestream at 6pm, because I went to the cinema to watch Alice in Wonderland in 3D, which I must say was a bit disapointing.

Well, going back to Miu Miu F/W 2010 first I thought it did not start very well, too much black. But once those purple and orange dresses came out, the show grabbed my attention again. The coleccion followed the on-going trend of preppy chique with some looks. Once I saw the pictures from the runway after I watch the video on youtube, I actually do like it and think a lot of the dresses are beautiful. The silk apliques and embroideries make the dresses very cute and playful. Lindsey Wixson opened the show and she is just 15 years old, and she is the face of the next campaign! so young.

Thoughts?

Alexander McQueen's final coleccion

Here is a sneak peak into Alexander McQueen's last coleccion, all of the items are more than just clothing - they are all pieces of art.

enjoy.

Givenchy ditches models

The french fashion house booked a couple of models from a modelling agent as "exclusives" only to cancel on the 5 of them the night before the Parisian fashion show, due to alleged "fit issues."

An agent said: "They booked these girls and told them they weren't allowed to walk for other designers. They don't even offer an 'exclusive' fee - just 1,500 euros and press."

The modelling agent even flew in a girl from Argentina, specifically for the show and was turned down at the last minute, and it was too late for her and the other 4 girls to book other shows.

I wonder what made Givency do this... maybe a better deal??

A Better Image

Doutzen kroes at Prada

Many designers are now using models closer to the real women, more curves and less bones. Well, not that Victoria's Secret models are like a lot of us girls, but at least they have got some curves. Big fashion houses like Louis Vuitton and Prada booked models they normally would not even think about for the runway.

Miuccia Prada has been known to support the tall, thin and pale look, however this season her aesthetic changed, and threw critics a literal "curve-ball". For Prada's W/F 2010 show the fashion house flew in many angels especially for this occasion:Alessandra, Doutzen, Miranda, Rosie, and Bianca which are all obviously slender, but famously shapely.

This season miuccia amazingly shifts our eyes from the clothes, to the way the woman's body transforms them. Both labels shared a similar line-up and trend: librarian chique. For once designers are letting clothes do what they should do, showcase the womens body - properly.

The 82nd Academy Awards

Another amazing night at the Oscar's! I was so happy I was able to watch the Oscar's as I've been watching them ever since I can remember religiously every single year.

Many different things this year, with two amazing hosts ( Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin) and many young Hollywood attendees ( which also seemed to work as the ratings went up 20% this year since last).

Along with the great ceremony, came an even better red carpet where nobody dissapointed. The trends of the night were gold and silver with many celebs as: Cameron Diaz, Miley Cyrus, Kate Winslet, Nicole Richie, Sandra Bullock.. opted for this look. As well we saw many bright colors, all ready for a beautiful spring to come! I was very impressed with this years red carpet this year and the only dress I definetely did not like was Charlize Theron's.. sorry!
